Aw, Nerve made Feminist Barack Obama images, based on the press conference he held yesterday in response to Todd Akin‘s now-infamous comments about “legitimate rape” not causing pregnancy. This isn’t the first time that the feminist Ryan Gosling meme has been applied to politics; most recently, a flurry of ironic Paul Ryan images started floating around the web after Mitt Romney announced his conservative running-mate. But it is the first time we’ve seen said trend applied to our President–and in a happily non-ironic way!
It’s very unlikely that you’re unfamiliar with the Akin controversy if you’ve used any kind of technology in the past two days, but just to make sure everyone’s up to speed: When the Missouri Republican was asked about the rape exception in anti-abortion laws, he responded by stating that “legitimate rape” rarely results in pregnancy, because the female body just knows to “shut that whole thing down.”
Though a few supporters have come out to back up Akin’s pro-life sentiments, most everyone else has condemned him for making such ignorant statements publicly. In fact, even members of the Republican party are urging him to withdraw from this year’s election because of the disgrace.
But our favorite two responses so far have come from a Blisstree Facebook follower (Natasha, you rock), whose comment–”this female body wold like to shut his whole thing down”–pretty much sums up how we feel, and Obama, who slammed Akin’s remarks and men making health care decisions for women in general.
