I know most of you were probably watching the Democratic National Convention last night (and good on you for doing so!), but you totally missed out on seeing the adorable and inspirational Fab Five at the MTV Video Music Awards. Team USA Gymnastics gold medalists Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber were all there. Gabby also performed with Alicia Keys and Nicki Minaj. Athletes + award shows? We love it.
Gabby, beaming in a sparkly top, did a serious of cartwheels and backflips to the song “Girl on Fire.” Check it out below:
I can’t remember another time an athlete has performed at an awards show, but it’s something I’d love to see more of. After all, athletes are celebrities just as much as traditional performers, but they provide inspiration of a slightly different sort than that of an actor or a singer. The choice of Gabby to perform this year was right on; she’s a new American role model, a terrific example of a formidable female and a “girl on fire”. Twitter went wild for her inclusion in the song, and so did the VMA audience.
As editor Meghan pointed out to me, the Fab Five represent girl power for a new generation. Not only does McKayla Maroney look exactly like a young Posh Spice (that smirk!), but their combination of spirit and strength is a great example for young girls. And did you see their outfits? Totally cute and totally age-appropriate. Other teenage girls in the public eye could take a page out of their strong-yet- sequinned book.
