Alicia Silverstone is usually known more for her eccentric hippie persona than for rational lifestyle advice. But in a new video, she offers some surprisingly level-headed advice for dating while vegan:
I’m not exactly sure what I expected from Alicia, but it was something a little bit more kooky. After all, she’s one of the most visible (and controversial) public faces of veganism; she runs an online community dedicated to healthy living, she feeds her baby chewed up food from her mouth, and she also recently wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin asking him to let one of the Pussy Riot members eat vegan while in prison. Sure, she’s a wild card, but the advice in her video is solid.
She doesn’t advocate trying to change the person you’re dating, just providing them with information on a plant-based diet (if they’re amenable, of course). She advises not to preach about being vegan, either:
I don’t think I’d show up on a first date and be like “I’m vegan! You have to be vegan too!” The best thing you can do is be open to finding a person you can love and that you think is really amazing.”
She also suggests trying to meet fellow vegans at places like yoga classes, farmer’s markets and eco events. Her main suggestion, though, is to keep an open mind. That seems really sensible to me. Thanks for the balanced perspective on a difficult and often awkward aspect of vegan life, Alicia!
