Whether you were an early adopter, or discovered it more recently via SNL or Ellen, by now you’ve heard of Korean rapper PSY‘s “Gangnam Style” hit song and music video. And admit it: You love it. I do, too. But even though I’ve done my part to make it the most “liked” YouTube video ever, it also completely terrifies me, because I just knew that Gangnam Dance was going to worm its way into fitness classes and become the next big workout trend. Which, for those of us who can’t dance, is an absolute nightmare.
James Fell, who wrote about the impending doom over at Chatelaine, shares my sentiment (although he was brave enough to try it at home). Trying the dance made him look like “a spider monkey coming off a bender,” and he suspects the Gangnam Dance workout trend will just be a flash in the pan. Still, it’s a good thing:
Fitness classes evolve based on the latest trends, and there’s nothing wrong with this. For many to be motivated to exercise, it needs to be a social endeavor.
Want to try it yourself? Fitness instructors at local gyms are starting to use the music in their classes (like Equinox spin instructors in New York, according to fitness blogger Sarah Dussault), and some instructors are already offering full-fledged “Gangnam Style Cardio Dance” classes. Strangely, most of the classes we could find were in Canada (America, I don’t know whether I should be proud, or ashamed). But never fear, you can do this at home while you wait for your gym to get with it.
If you missed the tutorial on Ellen from PSY himself, we recommend you start there. He teaches Britney Spears the basic moves, in a nice little video you can repeat several times until you get down the basic rhythm. Then, you have a few options.
Our girl Cassey at Blogilates put together an entire Gangnam Dance workout sequence, and other fitness instructors have posted their own interpretations on YouTube. A high-energy (but short) routine is available from Chakaboom Fitness, and we like the routine from Christian and Amanda at Bloggin’ Up A Sweat (it involves things like jump-squats and jumping jacks…things we are actually coordinated enough to do).
