As much as we like to tout vegetarian and vegan diets (or at least, cutting out meat and dairy) on this site, the fact is that veganism just might not work for everyone. For example, it apparently doesn’t work for Justin Bieber, who tried it out at the behest of his mentor, Usher. And, apparently, it turned him into kind of a pill. But then, maybe it wasn’t the veganism that did it–maybe it was just his crummy attitude.
Star magazine reported that Bieber “was such a brat” while he was on the diet that, “soon everyone was begging him to just eat a steak!” Could it be that the lack of animal products was responsible for his poor mood–or was it the fact that Biebs just wasn’t super game for trying a vegan lifestyle in the first place.
The “insider” who spoke with Star (read: not very credible witness, but it still makes a good story so…let’s go with it) noted that Bieber attempted to eat a tofu taco, but “was really grossed out. He made a big show of spitting out the food and making gagging noises.”
Not cool, Justin Bieber. Not cool.
This is the exact opposite of what I was hoping would happen if J-Biebs tried a vegan diet. Healthy eating among teens is a tough sell, but the former PETA spokesperson and teen heart-throb is in a position to sway young fans toward a more balanced diet. Unfortunately, his poor reaction to it probably won’t be convincing any of his Beliebers to be trying a non-meat alternative any time soon.
And maybe it’s not his job to be a good role model with his eating, and maybe if he just hates tofu he should stick with, I don’t know, Cheetos and steaks or whatever he likes to eat. But in a country where obesity is crushing the youth, some healthy eating might be nice to see from our teen idols.
Veganism isn’t a perfect diet, and plenty of folks do it in a not-healthy way. But a plant-based approach is a more sustainable, more healthy choice for a lot of people, and has helped a lot of stars (like Rosie, and Russell Brand, and Dax Shepard, and Michelle Pfeiffer) feel better about themselves, and inspire others to do the same.
Justin Bieber, I’m not afraid to say it. I’m a little disappointed in you.
