California’s Governor Jerry Brown just signed a new legislation that prohibits parents from sending their gay kids to therapy in hopes of turning them straight. It’s the first law of its kind to protect a minor’s sexual orientation and of course, the Republicans are the only ones opposing it.
The debate began over what’s known as “conversion therapy” where people believe a gay person can be talked into turning straight. It’s as ridiculous as it sounds, so thank goodness California’s Senator Ted Lieu realized that. He introduced a measure saying this type of crap therapy is not only nonscientific and unproven, it’s also abusive.
As if a child’s growing up years are not hard enough, imagine your parents sending you to therapy because they didn’t like your sexual orientation? Lieu also says this is potentially dangerous because in some cases patients have ended up committing suicide or dealing with severe mental and physical stress over their choices and who they believe they are.
No one should stand idly by while children are being psychological(ly) abused, and anyone who forces a child to try to change their sexual orientation must understand this is unacceptable. Gov. Brown should be commended for protecting LGBT youth by ending this type of quackery.
Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights agreed by saying this bill was necessary to prevent “state-licensed therapists cannot subject young people to practices that have been universally condemned by mainstream medical experts and that cause terrible harm.”
Of course Republicans opposed the bill (are you surprised?) stating that this was government interfering with the rights of parents. In other words, parents should have the right to raise their children however they see fit, even if that includes mentally abusing and bullying them into changing who they really are.
I have an idea: Let’s send those parents to “conversion therapy” and try to change them from straight to gay. Maybe then they will see how absurd they are.
