Say what you will about Obama‘s performance (or lack thereof) at the presidential debate this week, the man still scores points for women’s reproductive rights, and here’s more proof: A new study proves that under Obama’s new healthcare law requiring employers to give free birth control, this could prevent millions of unwanted pregnancies and abortions. And yet, conservatives–including Mitt Romney–continue to believe that free contraceptives will only make women more promiscuous.
Published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, researchers tracked more than 9,000 women, many of whom were poor and/or uninsured. When given free birth control, guess what happened? Unintended pregnancies went down, teen pregnancies declined and abortions also decreased.
In fact, there were 6.3 births per 1,000 teenagers versus the national rate of 34 births per 1,000 teens. And, there were 4.4 to 7.5 abortions per 1,000 women in the study, compared with 20 abortions per 1,000 women nationwide. Even if you’re opposed to free contraceptives, you can’t deny this is a good thing.
Dr. James T. Breeden, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists told Fox News that he agrees:
It’s just an amazing improvement. I would think if you were against abortions, you would be 100 percent for contraception access.
Under Obama’s new healthcare law, millions women in our country are just beginning to get access to contraception without copays. And yet, if Romney has his way, that would be reversed because it supposedly violates religious freedom. Others say it could also encourage riskier behaviors by women. Oh. OK. That makes a lot of sense. Give women free birth control and all of a sudden they will become sluts? I don’t think so. It’s more like, give women free birth control and all of a sudden millions of unwanted pregnancies will be decreased. Millions. That’s because nearly half of our country’s 6 million pregnancies each year are unintended. And an estimated 43% of them end in abortion.
So why should any women have to endure an unplanned pregnancy–and an abortion or a child they don’t want–simply because they can’t afford birth control? Even Republicans can’t deny the logic in Obama’s plan.
