Stella Boonshoft, an 18-year-old NYU college student, did something so amazingly awesome it’s making us want to hug her. She posted photos of herself in her underwear to her blog and basically told everyone–including many bullies and fat-shamers from her past–to go to hell if they can’t deal with her “big belly and fat arms.”
Boonshoft starts out with a warning message to those who are about to view her underwear-clad photo:
WARNING: Picture might be considered obscene because subject is not thin. And we all know that only skinny people can show their stomachs and celebrate themselves. Well I’m not going to stand for that. This is my body. Not yours. MINE. Meaning the choices I make about it, are none of your fucking business. Meaning my size, IS NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS.
She goes on to say that basically, she loves her body and doesn’t care if others don’t:
If my big belly and fat arms and stretch marks and thick thighs offend you, then that’s okay. I’m not going to hide my body and my being to benefit your delicate sensitivities.
Wow. Imagine if every teenager–and woman, for that matter–had the same confidence and acceptance of their body. What a different world we would live in, for sure.
The college student went on to include some major f-u messages to some of the people who had ridiculed, criticized and shamed her in the past, including people who told her she was too fat as a child or that she’s be prettier if she just lost a few pounds.
Can you imagine hearing that as a child? How that would affect the way you viewed yourself and your body? Unfortunately, too many of us can. Those taunts and jokes and put-downs stay with us forever.
But luckily for Boonshoft, she is fighting back. Perhaps the best comeback on her blog was a message to herself:
MOST OF ALL, this picture is for me. For the girl who hated her body so much she took extreme measures to try to change it. Who cried for hours over the fact she would never be thin. Who was teased and tormented and hurt just for being who she was.
The 18-year-old, who is wise beyond her years, ends her post with a simple statement that is so powerful:
I’m so over that.
THIS IS MY BODY, DEAL WITH IT.
Boomshoft was on Today this morning and explained her goal with this photo. Take a look and let us know if you love her, too!
