In the midst of a trial where accusations of her one-time meth addiction and mental problems are flying, Britney Spears appeared on The Tonight Show Monday night looking lovely and seeming refreshingly normal.
The 30-year-old pop princess turned X-Factor judge appeared alongside Simon Cowell to promote their show’s new season, which premieres Nov. 1, and the two were strangely sweet together. They had an easy rapport, and seemed to genuinely get along. At one point, Cowell asserts:
“Anything you put in front of Britney, she will eat.”
Spears sort of squeals in faux-outrage before shrugging and admitting:
“I love food.”
It was cute, and honest. Spears seemed more like the bubbly blond from Mississippi she first appeared on the scene as than the head-shaving, umbrella-wielding nutjob we keep hearing about in her former manager’s defamation case against her parents.
Jay Leno’s interview with them is pretty mundane: Spears loves ice! She doesn’t like socks! Cowell believes in cryogenics! – actually, that last one is kind of bizarrely interesting (he also had his house ‘spiritually cleansed’ recently; who knew old sourpuss was such a mystic?). But if there’s one thing we love in American culture more than celebrity breakdowns, it’s celebrity comebacks. It’s nice to see Spears seeming healthy, happy and over whatever demons dogged her for a few years.
