This week on That Girl we are celebrating Frances Cordova, a natural model, personal trainer and ambassador for Healthy is the New Skinny, an organization that strives to bring health, joy and responsibility to the beauty and fashion industry (hooray for that!). Frances says she grew up playing basketball, field hockey and lacrosse. Now, she’s more into boxing, circuit training and conditioning. “Anything that gets my heart pumping: count me in!” We especially love what she says inspires her to get fit everyday…take a look:
Originally from Ponce, Puerto Rico
Currently reside in Connecticut
Model/ Fitness Coach / Ambassador for Healthy is the New Skinny
Fitness/health accomplishment you are most proud of:
I’m mostly proud of the fact that I’ve continued to be healthy despite LIFE happening. I’ve found a balance and understand that without healthy choices, I won’t be at my best. Most recently, becoming a fitness coach. The fact that I’m able to help others with their health goals is definitely an accomplishment. They HATE me and LOVE me at the same time. It’s great! And yeah, I eat salad now! (Pretty big deal considering I’ve disliked veggies all of my life!)
What inspires you to get fit every day?
Me. The “team”. My clients. I stay fit for me, but I also want to set a good example for those around me. The way I feel when I’m consistently active vs. the “lazy” spells. It’s amazing the “happy” that comes with staying active. I LOVE feeling sore! It may seem like an odd thing, but being sore makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something during a workout. When I wake up and have that soreness, I know I have no choice but to get my body moving again. If not, D.O.M.S.(delayed onset muscle soreness) sets in, and nobody likes that!
What do you do when you don’t feel like working out?
I share that feeling with my “team”. I work closely with a group of trainers. We ALL motivate each other and that really helps, but there are times when you have to listen to your body. So, I relax knowing that the next day I will get back in it and go hard! It’s all a balance and trust me it’s not easy, but it’s possible and so worth it!
Favorite energizing meal:
Grilled Chicken, a sweet potato with cinnamon sprinkled on top, a protein shake and water. Did I mention how much I dislike veggies!?! Recently, I decided to be a grown up and started eating salad, so I’ll add a small caesar salad if I’m still hungry. It’s a filling meal but doesn’t give you that, “I’ve fallen and can’t get up!” feeling.
What’s your favorite way to chill post-workout?
I love a hot shower! There are days that I train, then train clients and I’m so exhausted afterwards that I reward myself with a mani/pedi! I wish I had the time for a mani/pedi and massage everyday.
What is your top kick-ass workout?
Chains, tires, hammers, sleds, ropes, etc. I love circuit training with equipment that you wouldn’t expect a “girl” to train with. You feel strong, and it’s so much more entertaining than being on a treadmill forever. Oh yeah, boxing is a close second! Not to mention a great stress reliever.
Where is your favorite/most unique place you’ve ever exercised?
I definitely don’t have a favorite place because I like to get in a workout whenever possible, but I took a trip to Spain years ago and got to run in the streets of Villanueva de la Serena, a small town in the southwestern region of Spain. The people smiled, waved—something about their friendliness made my runs in another country very enjoyable.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned through sports?
You need a TEAM! Start w/ your mind and body working together! If you tell yourself you can’t; you won’t. If you decide that you can; you will! There are days when you just don’t feel like working out and that goes for everyone, but surround yourself with other active people and share your struggles. Sometimes, just getting to the gym is what you need in order to find motivation. The TEAM(mind/body) within yourself and those you surround yourself with will make being “healthier” much easier.
