First there was Zeddie Little, now there’s Baby Joey, also known as “ridiculously good-looking surgery baby.” Not only is he adorable (and, like Little, extremely photogenic); he sports a surprisingly laid-back grin in the post-open heart surgery photo-op that’s started going viral. The scar–which runs down his chest–is from the first in what may be a series of surgeries to repair a congenital heart defect. Joey seems unfazed–but just look at his photo page and tell us your heart doesn’t feel like it’s about to burst.
According to the website his family set up, joeyheartsyou.com, Joey Powling was born with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), which is basically a tiny hole in the heart caused by muscle fibers growing in the wrong direction. (It’s also called “blue baby syndrome,” because it causes low oxygen levels in the blood, causing skin to appear blue). He received his first surgery on October 25, and despite a scar that betrays just how tough it must have been on his tiny body, he has been doing so well that he flashed his now-famous smile just five days after his first surgery took place on October 25.
His family is using the chance to raise awareness for congenital heart disease (and money for their baby’s medical bills), explaining on their site:
Because Joey now has so many followers, it is very important that this be used as an opportunity to spread awareness about TOF, as well as other heart defects. So many children are born with congenital heart disease, and the world needs to know that it is common and it can be treated. With the proper medical attention, many children can grow up to live normal lives. Joey wants you to know that it will be okay.
Joey is also building his own community on Facebook (at just three months old!) and is making the rounds on talk shows now that he’s getting so much attention. And with everyone rooting with him, we think his parents are probably right: It will be okay. So sit back and enjoy your biggest smile of the day looking at these photos of awesome little Baby Joey:
