Legal Marijuana: How To Smoke Weed, According To Seattle Police Department (Really)

legal marijuana
The Seattle Police are taking the lead in the brave new world of legal marijuana, publishing a guide to how to smoke Seattle pot just a few days after Washington state passed a law making it legal to carry up to an ounce of marijuana without breaking the law. The law doesn’t go into effect until December 6, but the humorous guide speaks to readers who hasn’t let it stop them. So, assuming you’re familiar with how to do the actual smoking, we chose a few of the best highlights of the Seattle PD’s guide to legal weed.

The guide, called “Marijwhatnow? A Guide to Legal Marijuana Use In Seattle,” was published on their official blog by writer Jonah Spangenthal-Lee, formerly a writer at The Stranger, and is filled with funny references to stoner culture and Seattle pot. But still, humorous questions (see: “What happens if I get pulled over and I’m sober, but an officer or his K9 buddy smells the ounce of Super Skunk I’ve got in my trunk?”) are answered with helpful info, so we browsed and distilled the most important (and interesting info), should you be getting ready to celebrate I-502 next month.

A few things you should know about legal marijuana if you life (or smoke) in Seattle:

You have to be 21. Sorry, kiddos.

None of this applies to federal law enforcement. In Seattle, it’s just the Seattle Police Department who are obliged to respect the new laws under Initiative 502. So, don’t carry pot or smoke up on federal property.

There’s no such thing as growing legal weed or selling legal weed. The State Liquor Control Board is trying to work out how the sale and distribution of legal marijuana in Washington will work, but for now…it seems legal marijuana has some serious kinks to work out.

Be careful where you smoke it. The law says that you’re not allowed to have your weed out in view of the general public.

Driving high still isn’t ok. If the Seattle Police think you’re under the influence (of anything), you can get in trouble. Oh, and driving while you’re under the influence (of anything) is just generally a really bad idea.

Be smart, and be safe, folks!
