I get completely debilitating hangovers. Like, totally prostrate on the couch, can’t move, feel like I was hit with a Mack truck, can barely open my eyes to watch a Say Yes To The Dress marathon type of hangovers. I haven’t always been this way, but as I hit my mid-twenties the morning-after misery has really ramped up. Since this is the season for holiday parties (and holiday hangovers) I thought I’d share some of my all-natural hangover remedies.
Turns out coconut water is way better for hangovers than the Gatorade I chugged all through college. It’s chock full of electrolytes (especially potassium) and can rehydrate you pretty quickly. I like to keep a bottle on hand to drink before I go to bed and another to have as soon as I wake up. It’s kind of pricey, but worth it. If you don’t like the taste of plain coconut water, the brand Vita Coco makes it in several different flavors, including orange, pineapple and pomegranate.
Yup! It’s probably one of the last things you feel like doing, but having sex is actually really good for your body after a night of drinking. Not only does it get you sweating out the toxins from the night before, but the oxytocin your brain will produce is a natural pain reliever.
It will help rehydrate you, but a steaming cup of hot ginger tea can also stave off your queasiness. It’s a bit more comforting than ginger ale and a lot more natural than something like Tums or Pepto Bismol. Dried or crystallized ginger is also great for a topsy-turvy tummy. Here’s a little video that teaches you to make a ginger, honey and lemon drink.
This is actually more of a hangover preventer, but my boyfriend and I swear by it. He was tipped off to activated charcoal from a friend and ever since we got a bottle, we’ve been hooked. Basically, when you take an activated charcoal pill, it absorbs some of the toxins in your system, cutting down on unpleasant morning-after symptoms like flatulence and nausea. Take a pill before you go to bed and you might just find that your hangover is a little less harsh than you anticipated. We make all of our friends try it and they are always pleasantly surprised by how actually not bad they feel in the morning.
