If you think you’ve lost faith in humanity, one Iowa City teenager proves that you shouldn’t. He and his friends are fighting back against cyber bullies in the simplest and most awesome way: random tweets of kindness to their classmates. It’s a story that will warm your heart and restore your hope for the future.
High school junior, Jeremiah Anthony, was fed up with all the negativity on social media after reading a story about cyber bullies and how destructive they are to their victims. So, to fight back in a positive way, Anthony created a Twitter feed to send random messages of compliments and praise to his fellow West High School classmates.
“You shouldn’t be such a coward you have to hide behind a screen and say bad things to people,” he told TODAY.
What began with one student has now spread to many more. Anthony and friends now send praise to randomly picked classmates, and sometimes teachers, under the Twitter handle @WestHighBros. To date, they have delivered more than 3,000 uplifting tweets. It’s this simple act that Anthony says is combating bullying:
I believe that showing the goodness in people is very integral to our account because so many people on Twitter and Facebook, they get cyber bullied because they’re less than perfect. And no one is perfect, so we try to have as sincere compliments as possible. I think everyone likes a sincere compliment..
Here are some of the tweets sent so far:
@alexandra_dobre Very creative and wise. You’re an outstanding musician, with your guitar and your voice.Keep being lovely and caring of all
To @evpurk: “Your encouraging personality and generosity toward others makes you very likeable. You’re quite the intelligent kid, keep it up.”
And to @zachnullmeyr: “You are the man, one of the best runners West has right now. You have more work ethic than just about anyone.”
As this teenager has proven, changing the world doesn’t always require something huge. In fact, it’s often the little things in life that make the biggest different, right?
