If you resolved to try a new sport this year, you need to watch Jamie Petitto‘s new video about learning Capoeira. It’s easy to get paralyzed by gym jitters and anxiety when you’re trying something new for the first time–especially something physical like sports and workout classes. Which is why we love Jamie’s series, “See Gurl Try.” This week, she tested out Capoeira; if she can do Brazilian martial arts, you can keep your promise to try something new, too.
What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that began when slaves in Brazil, who were forbidden from practicing martial arts, disguised them as a dance. It’s become trendy in recent years thanks to movies like Ocean’s Twelve and Harry Potter, which feature characters who practice Capoeira.
Why Try Capoeira Classes?
As the physical benefits of Capoeira have become better-known, it’s also become a popular element of fitness classes. Playing Capoeira requires constant movement–providing awesome cardio–and the primary movements involve low lunges and squats, which are great for building muscle in the lower body. Plus, it’s fun: Unlike many other forms of martial arts, Capoeira is traditionally accompanied by music and done in a large social circle, which makes it a great sport to try with friends.
Even if capoeira isn’t your bag, Jamie’s video is a good reminder that it’s not nearly as difficult as it seems to get out and try something new. The new season of See Gurl Try promises to be inspiring–and not in that “gee, isn’t it cool to watch a super-fit athlete kick ass at new sports every week” kind of way. Jamie is a master crafter, but she’s not a super experienced athlete or someone who’s already tried tons of sports and physical activities. So: She’s a lot like the rest of us. Which should make you feel a little better about your ability to get out and try new things.
