She’s a model, actress and she has her own swimwear line, so it’s understandable that Elizabeth Hurley might have some slightly warped ideas about what women “should” look like. But in a recent interview with Tatler Russia, the 47-year-old Hollywood veteran revealed the kind of crazy pressure put on women in her industries to fit specific (and unforgiving) molds, particularly as they age.
In a pseudo-body positive quote about not trying to be ultra-thin as she gets older, Liz Hurley told Tatler:
I keep my eye on what I eat all the time, because now that we’re older we have to make a conscious decision if we want to stay relatively slim… But as you get older, it doesn’t actually look that attractive to be super skinny.
It’s not necessarily unhealthy to watch what you eat as you get older (or at any age, really), but her attitude doesn’t seem to stem from concerns about health. It’s all about maintaining the right weight: not too fat, but not too skinny, either.
For the most part, I just think it’s sad that women who work in fashion and entertainment are so beholden to crazy beauty standards that their perspective on health and beauty becomes so warped.
