Country singer Mindy McCready died Sunday in what looks to be a suicide. Police found the 37-year-old dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home with “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to a release from the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office. Her death comes little more than a month after record producer David Wilson — McCready’s boyfriend and the father of her younger son, born last April — was found dead on the same porch of a suspected self-inflicted gunshot.
If that sounds cinematic, it’s in keeping with much of McCready’s life and career. She left Florida for Nashville at 18, got her demo tape to a producer and signed a recording contract within a year. Her first album, out in 1996, sold two million copies. Her next few albums sold, but less so. She was beaten and choked nearly to death by boyfriend Billy McKnight in 2005; went to jail for a year on drug charge a probation violation; attempted suicide upon release; got back together with McKnight and had his child (the now 6-year-old Zander). Along the way she attempted suicide and overdosed on drugs several times and was among the 3rd season cast of VH1′s Celebrity Rehab With Doctor Drew.
And that’s just an abridged version. McCready’s story seems to have followed a classically sad and troubling archetype; she also leaves behind a very real and grieving family including two young sons. What can be said? I’ll leave you with a link to some McCready music videos and this tweet from Wynonna Judd:
