The Canadians have come up with a pretty ingenius new PSA against social smoking.
Funny, right? And pretty clever, too. It’s obvious this ad is targeting teens and young adults, but I imagine it might make an impression on tweens and younger kids, too, even if they’re still in that stage of thinking that bathroom humor is hilarious. Whoever this actress is, she’s nailing it, too. I especially love the part when she winsomely asks a dude at the party if he’ll “go outside for a fart.” Ew, but I know I always see people ask people they’re crushing on to go outside and have a cigarette.
I think the tone of this PSA is right on: it’s humorous, but it also gets at a real issue in a sophisticated way. Social smoking can certainly be a lot more serious than something you casually do at parties; Lisa Smirl, the 37-year-old woman who died of undiagnosed lung cancer I wrote about a few weeks ago, described herself as a social smoker. Equating smoking with farting is broad, yes, but hopefully it’ll get a least a few people to understand how gross (and hypocritical) social smoking really is.
