There’s a flurry of information coming out right now about the suspected bombers in Monday’s attacks on the Boston Marathon. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the 26-year-old suspected bomber who was killed last night in a fire storm with the police, was apparently an amateur boxer who was hoping to eventually become selected for the US Olympic team.
Tamerlan, who fled Chechnya (a federal subject of Russia in the Caucasus Mountains) in the early 90s with his family, was the subject of a photo essay by photographer Johannes Hirn called “Will Box For Passport.” The photos and accompanying captions paint a strange picture of the man authorities suspect might be responsible for the death of 3 and the injuries of hundreds in the Boston bombings.
People appear to be reading a lot into the captions for some of the pictures, quotes from Tamerlan like “I don’t have a single American friend, I don’t understand them.” The profile quotes Tamerlan saying:
“God said no alcohol. There are no values anymore,” and worries that “people can’t control themselves.”
His reported Amazon.com wishlist also contains titles that could provide insight into the mind of someone who may have committed one of the worst crimes in recent memory: titles like How to Make Driver’s Licenses and Other ID on Your Home Computer, The I.D. Forger: Homemade Birth Certificates & Other Documents Explained, Secrets Of A Back Alley ID Man: Fake Id Construction Techniques Of The Underground, and The Lone Wolf And the Bear: Three Centuries of Chechen Defiance of Russian Rule.
We still have no information as to what the brother’s motives might have been and the younger brother, Dzokhhar Tsarnaev, 19, is still at large in the Watertown, MA area. I’m sure much more information (as well as speculation) will be coming out in the next few days and I hope we’ll be able to learn some concrete facts about who perpetrated the bombings and why they chose to do so.
