There’s a little less body negativity in the world thanks to feminist writer Chloe Angyal and her recent takedown of some fat-shaming oatmeal. Yes, fat-shaming oatmeal.
She snapped a picture of Oatmeals NY’s sign, a sign that said:
Did you know….Bagel (w/cream cheese): 600 calories
Oatmeal (w/fresh berries): 150 calories
Summer’s coming….just sayin’.
“Our apologies, we are only trying to highlight the health benefits of #oatmeal, not offend anyone. The sign will be removed.”
Chloe Angyal is one of my favorite feminist writers (Follow her over on Feministing, if you’re interested). It doesn’t surprise me that she has an eagle-eye for this kind of thing, or that she called the company out directly. On the scale of offensiveness, the sign probably ranks pretty low to most people, but I think she was right to voice her complaint. The implicit argument in the calorie comparison is bad enough, but something about that little “Just sayin’” aside there at the end really raises my hackles.
