Cincinnati Mayoral Candidate Claims He’s Handing Out Free Marijuana Plants Today

Ah, Cincinnati, Ohio. Our symbol is the flying pig, our former mayor is Jerry Springer and and a guy who would like to be mayor soon is handing out free marijuana plants today.

Jim Berns, the libertarian candidate for mayor of Cincinnati, said he has 48 marijuana plants to give away for free. In a press release that included the above photo, Berns announced his plans to hand them out at the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Clifton Avenue in downtown Cincinnati Wednesday around 5 p.m.

“I’m trying to bring attention to an abusive law,” Berns told the local ABC News affiliate. ”I look forward to seeing [the police] there. We’ll see what happens.”

Under Ohio law, marijuana is defined as a controlled substance that’s illegal to obtain, posses or use. The state has no medical marijuana laws on the books, and currently lacks any protections for people who use marijuana medically.

Berns also likes guns.

Legalizing marijuana has been a big part of Berns’ platform—or “re-legalizing,” as he calls it.

“The vast majority of Americans do not realize that the USA became a great country before marijuana was criminalized in 1930s as a way to discriminate against Mexican-Americans and blacks moving from the south to the north,” he said in a press release earlier this year.

“Over and over I heard stories how loved ones got into trouble with the law for using marijuana, a substance of little danger compared to alcohol. These stories illustrate how we are making a serious health problem into a tragedy for families and the community. Over 300 Ohioans are killed in alcohol related traffic accidents each year. According to DrugFacts.Org of the over 2 million people who died in 2009 in the U.S none were from the use of marijuana.”

He supports Ohio state Rep. Robert F. Hagan’s proposal to re-legalize marijuana for medicinal use and a second proposal that would allow people 21-years-old and older to buy and use marijuana.
