10 Fittest Cities In The U.S. (According To Facebook)

fit-americansWhen you finish a  rigorous workout, do you immediately tell all of your friends on Facebook about it? Apparently, some people do that and without them, Facebook wouldn’t have been able to formulate this list.

The people at Facebook analyzed three months worth of data like “fitness-related mentions, check-ins and use of fitness apps over a period of three months in U.S. cities with at least 200,000 Facebook users” to determine and rank the 10 fittest cities. I was actually surprised by a number of the cities mentioned. I know I’m a coastal jerk, but I expected more facebook-fitness from California and New York.

10 Fittest Cities:

  1. Virginia Beach, VA
  2. Colorado Springs, CO
  3. Austin, TX
  4. San Antonio, TX
  5. Livingston, NJ
  6. Portland, OR
  7. El Paso, TX
  8. Oklahoma City, OK
  9. Tacoma, WA
  10. Albuquerque, NM

Facebook also used activity-specific mentions to rank cities based on the popularity of certain activities. This list also surprised me a bit. Who knew how popular Triathlons were anywhere? In no particular order, here are the cities that mention specific activities most frequently:

  1. Austin, Texas: Yoga
  2. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: Running
  3. Tucson, Arizona: Swimming
  4. Minneapolis, Minnesota: Biking
  5. El Paso, Texas: CrossFit
  6. Oakland, California: Dance
  7. Grand Rapids, Michigan: Triathlons
  8. San Diego, California: Marathons
  9. Wichita, Kansas: Health Clubs
  10. Livingston, New Jersey: Weight Loss (most life events regarding losing weight)
  11. Chicago, Illinois: Adventurous (tried new sports)

I’m not quite sure what to make of either set of rankings. Could it be that in these cities people are more likely to use Facebook to track their exercise? Maybe there are more yogis somewhere other than Austin, but they aren’t using social networks to talk about their practices. I suppose the data Facebook collected doesn’t measure fitness so much as it measures how chatty people are about it depending on where in the U.S. they reside.
