Water polo and rugby players may think they’re tough cookies, but their games are basically as dangerous as checkers when compared to cheerleading. If you think that cheerleading is just a bunch of pom pom waving girls in skimpy outfits bouncing around and supporting the real athletes, you better check yourself before you get wrecked by a cheerleading daredevil. Those women are hard mother-fuckers.
Due to our outrageously misogynistic society, it’s quite a surprise to learn that cheerleading is indeed the most dangerous sport for women in the United States…by a lot. Probably even more than we even know of considering undiagnosed concussions and what not. Just how physically demanding and risky is cheer?
According to new research published in the Journal of Pediatrics a lofty 66% of sporting injuries resulting in permanent disability or medical conditions were caused by cheerleading. The number soars to 70% when it comes to college level cheer. How many of those injuries do you think were caused by cheerleaders getting their menstrual periods? I’m guessing none, most of the the cheerleading related injuries were endured by those catching high flying teammates.
There are about 3.6 million American people cheering and about 96% of cheerleaders are women or girls. Considering how many of those 3.6 million are getting injured performing these feats of athleticism, it’s embarrassing for our nation that a mere 29 states consider cheerleading a real sport.
