The ongoing saga of the ups and downs of Jessica Simpson’s weight continues. Though all celebrity women have their bodies scrutinized, sometimes it seems like she might somehow experience worse scrutiny than most. Even before she started having kids it was a problem: there was the time she got into crazy shape to play Daisy Duke, the time her dad said weird stuff about her boobs, the time she wore high waisted jeans…it would be impossible to list every moment Jessica Simpson’s body had in the spotlight for one reason or another. Ever since the tabloid fixture gained an alleged 70 pounds while gestating her daughter, Maxwell Drew, coverage of the star has focused almost explicitly on her body, more specifically on her weight.
Now, after the birth of her second child, Simpson is playing the game and profiting off of the inappropriate attention payed to her physique. Simpson’s most Weight Watchers endorsement speaks for itself.
As the New York Daily News puts it:
Barely four months after giving birth to her second child, son Ace Knute Johnson, the fashion mogul showed off her incredible post-baby slim down in a new photo for her Weight Watchers’ campaign.
I feel like a jerk for saying it because she looks so smiley in the instagram she posted about the campaign (above), it’s a troubling how we glorify an “incredible post-baby slim down.” Simpson has all the resources in the world and serious financial motivation to lose weight quickly, it’s not so accessible for everyone. Though, it is oddly encouraging that Simpson is making money off of Weight Watchers. At least she’s getting hers for putting up with this garbage and she has acknowledged that it’s garbage. In September she said:
“I will never understand why people give pregnant women such a hard time.Â We are creating a human life: I think we get every excuse in the world to eat a doughnut!”
No one should need an excuse to eat a donut, pregnant or not, but whatever. She’s right. At least she’s figured out how to make that hard time she’s given worth it.
