I love to be crass, but it usually takes a lot for me to talk about bowel movements. I’m not usually one for scatological humor, but when the right opportunity strikes, I’m all for it. That’s why this “poo-phoria” business I’ve seen floating about the internet piqued my twisted interest. “What is poo-phoria?” You ask. Well, it’s a portmanteau combining poo and euphoria. Have you ever had a bowel movement that felt like “like a religious experience or an orgasm?” That’s poo-phoria and a Princeton doctor has figured out why it happens.
According to poop research (that’s research about poop and not research that’s really crappy), the passing of a big ol’ turd is stimulating to your body’s nerves in a way that’s akin to orgasm, or in more medical terms “The distention of the rectum that comes with the passing of a large mass of stool causes the vagus nerve to fire.” Past research has implied that women that have had complete spinal chord injury are capable of reaching orgasm through the vagus nerve, so those poo-phoric feelings are legit.
Here’s a very basic rundown of poo-phoria, broken up by my thoughts:
“The net effect of this is a drop in your heart rate and blood pressure, which in turn decreases blood flow to the brain”
Everyone is getting all hot and bothered in the afterglow of particularly large bowel movements because their brains need more blood.
“When mild, the lightheadedness can lead to a sense of sublime relation – the high.”
That’s the good stuff.
“However, a more significant drop in brain perfision can cause ‘defecation syncope’, a dangerous syndrome that results in a loss of consciousness.”
If you or anyone you know has passed out on the toilet, please email me immediately. We need to talk.
Dr. Anish Sheth, the Princeton gastroenterologist researching poo-phoria and co-author of What’s Your Poop Telling You?, claims that the euphoric rush you get from big time poops is ”relatively safe, but can become an addiction for some.” Which raises the question, why hasn’t there been an episode of My Strange Addiction on TLC about someone who can’t stop pooping?
