Let’s give some context to Okawa’s age to really drive home just how old one-hundred-and-sixteen-years-old really is. According toÂ The Telegraph,Â ”[i]n the year in which Misao Okawa was born in Osaka, Queen Victoria was still on the British throne, the Spanish American War was raging and Horatio Kitchener triumphed in the Battle of Omdurman.” Also, her babies are in their nineties and her husband died in 1931. Basically, she’s seen some thingsâ€“probably more things than anyone else alive.Â She is so freaking old, but she’s still got it.Â
Here is 5 ways to live like Mrs Okawa, oldest person alive and certified bad-ass survivor:
- Eat well and rest- “Eat and sleep and you will live a long time.” That advice comes straight from Okawa’s message toÂ The Telegraph. The head of the Kurenai retirement home where Mrs. Okawa lives says that she “eats three large meals a day and makes sure that she sleeps eight hours a night.”
- Learn to love healthy food- Mrs. Okawa’s favorite food is sushi, specificallyÂ mackerel on vinegar-steamed rice. She eats it at least once a month. That sounds delicious and good for you. Holy mackerel, I want some right now.
- Calm down- In her message she also mention that â€œYou have to learn to relax,” if you want to live to give advice on how to live a long life.
- Live in Japan- The Telegraph reports that “Experts say it is no coincidence that both record-holders are from Japan, which was home to 54,397 centenarians on the last Respect for the Aged national holiday in September – including 282 super-centenarians, who have achieved the ripe old age of 110.” The Japanese are killing it on the longevity front.
- Be resilient- Mrs. Okawa broke her leg after falling at age 102. After a stay in the hospital, she returned to her nursing home and was spied by the staff “doing leg squats as she held on to a hand rail in the hall.” She didn’t want to her body to get our of shape, even at 102-years-old. That’s determination, my friends.
