I’m blown away by anyone with the gumption to train for a marathon, so tell me a story about someone completing a race against all odds, and I’ll be sobbing on the floor in thirty seconds or less. For instance, it’s been an hour since I found out about Harriette Thompson, a 91-year-old woman who just completed her fifteenth marathon, and I’m still wiping tears off my chin. Wow.
Thompson, who recently underwent radiation treatments for skin cancer, powered through this weekend’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego, where she finished with an impressive time of 7:07:42. She set a new speed record for her age group (um, duh) and officially beat out Betty White for Blisstree’s coveted title of Coolest Elderly Badass in the World. And to make this story even better? She’s making money for important causes with every step. After losing several family members to cancer, Thompson has been working to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. According to its director, she’s already brought more than $90,000 to the group.
So what keeps her going so strong? According to Shape Magazine, she’s all about her blender:
I’m an advertisement for Vitamix,” she says of her diet, which has to be ground up. (The machine was a gift from her children.) “I cut sugar, eat healthy things, go to bed early, and read until I sleep.
