Guess what, everyone? If you send a text that ends in a period instead of an exclamation mark, you’re an asshole.
Well, maybe saying “asshole” is taking it a little too far. But apparently, insincere folks — and you know, jerks — end their texts with a big, fat, all-concluding and demonizing period.
A new study out of SUNY Binghamton had undergrad participants rate texts featuring an invitation and reply. The participants reported that the replies that were properly punctuated with a period were less sincere, according to the Washington Post.
If you’re freaking out because you just sent out 100 Christmas cards that all end with the ominous period, don’t. The angry period theory does not apply to handwritten notes, which were also part of the study.
In a press release, lead researcher Celia Klin explains:
“Texting is lacking many of the social cues used in actual face-to-face conversations. When speaking, people easily convey social and emotional information. Thus, it makes sense that texters rely on what they have available to them—emoticons, deliberate misspellings that mimic speech sounds, and, according to our data, punctuation.”
So I guess, just talk like this! To all of your friends! Every day! Because texting without punctuation will make you seem like an asshole! However, you’ll also probably be perceived as needy! Too enthusiastic! And annoying!
