20 reasons why having your own work space is great

There are lots of wonderful things about having your own work space – here are a few of mine
- You can shut the door to your studio next time your neighbor comes over for coffee (or you have a dinner party). There’s no need to worry about how messy the floor is!
- Your very expensive & precious cutting shears will stay out of the hands of children/husband/guests who need to cut a piece of paper.
- Music can be played without annoying your room-mates/husbands etc.
- Straight pins will be kept out of your living room carpet.
- Your work computer won’t be hogged by family trying to check email/play games/download music.
- No need to worry about little hands playing with the sewing machine!
- You can keep your expensive fabric paints separate from the cheap finger paint.
- Because sometimes you just need your own space to work in.
- You can shut the door if the cat is insisting on sleeping on the freshly-blocked piece of hand-embroidery you just finished.
- You don’t need to “decorate” your studio to match the rest of your house.
- Having a studio can help to keep work & home separate (always a challenge for the self-employed!)
- It’ s a safe space to keep the mildly-poisonous house plant you just can’t bear to give away.
- Hey, it’s a safe space to keep anything that shouldn’t be shared – like dark chocolate
- In my case, it’s place for the birds & fish to live without worrying about the dogs.
- You can leave projects sitting on tables without having to clean them off to serve dinner.
- Because inspiration can hit at 3am – you can work without disturbing fellow cohabitants.
- So that your mother-in-law won’t have to ask questions about the new nude embroidered piece you’re working on.
- And your kid’s friends won’t ask their moms about the nude embroidered piece you’re working on.
- You can be as tidy as you like or as messy as you like – I personally tend to go for the piles method of organizing.
- Creativity needs to be allowed into your life, it’s got to be encouraged & cultivated. Creating a space to be creative in is one of the best ways I can think of to do that
Okay, it’s your turn. Why do you have a studio?

We just moved and I have an office area finally and I can totally relate. Number three is probably my favorite element of having my own space.
Play it often and play it loud.
I really do #13 ….I’m a chocoholic
I am not blessed to have my own work space…yet, but I could come up with at least twenty…for me leaving the mess without worrying about guests, dinner, kids getting into it, and all that would be great!
