Isabel's parents filed an administrative law case against Waukee Community School District, Heartland Area Education Agency 11. A judge ruled in their favor, and the District and Education Agency lost their appeal. A federal judge has ordered the defendants to pay the Loefflers $50,000+ to compensate them for legal fees.
The family's civil case, which is one of two filed against the District on similar matters, is pending.

As a result of the attention to the Loeffler case and the rulings, the Iowa State Board of Education on September 11, 2008 approved changes to Iowa's corporal punishment rules, which had been unamended since 1991.

Revised rules,

I have always been a opponet of time-out rooms. I had been diagnosed with ADHD as a child, and was in my area's special education program where they used time-out rooms. I have first-hand knowledge that these techniques do not work on most children, and in my opinion, a form of abuse. This is no better than imprisoning your child in a closet at home, something child protective services would take your children for doing, so what makes these teachers, most who are not qualified to deal with these special needs children, above the law?

If my school district my daughter goes to used a time-out room on her even once, I would pull her out and sue them!

Doesn't 5 minutes seem like an extraordinarily long time for an autistic 8 year old to be expected to sit perfectly still? I'm not against the "time out" concept per se (my son gets sent to his room to chill out fairly often...) but that looks like some kind of torture system designed to break a child's spirit. And not letting her go to the bathroom is atrocious. My son had an aide at school once who got into a power struggle with him about when he should be allowed to go to the bathroom, and by the time we found out she was trying to restrict his access, we ended up dealing with about two months of constipation that resulted from the trauma. What is wrong with these people?

That has to be the most awful video I have seen. For that to even be allowed is beyond my understanding. I do not feel that was in any means appropriate at all. To think that people who take care of our children would even feel that is appropriate. My thoughts will be on this for awhile. I do not know how i would react and my husband would be in JAIL with no doubts.

I saw students give presentations about psychology, discipline and punishment this morning---references were made to totalitarian regimes----but I kept thinking about Isabel Loeffler.
