$30 Camp Physical, Summer, and a Contest

At the beginning of the month, I wrote Lost Health Insurance? Take Care Clinic.

xchng_canoeingBecause of the tough times many families are facing, companies like Walgreen’s, which runs the Take Care Clinics, are offering special deals. I received an email the other day that told me about a special, time-limited offer that Take Care Clinics are offering: half-price camp physicals .

Most camps require that their campers have these annual physicals before they are allowed to come, but the cost of the physical may be beyond the means of someone who is unemployed. The Take Care camp physical includes a complete review of your child’s health history and immunizations to ensure they are up-to-date.

campingSummer time is not only time for summer camp, but for spending more time outside and enjoying what nature has to offer. It’s also a time when many accidents, injuries, and illnesses can occur, so the Take Care website offers some good Summer Health Tips .

And now the contest.

Walgreen’s Take Care clinics has given us two prize packs to give away:

*  Take Care Coffee Mug
* Take Care Forehead Thermometer
* Take Care Magnets
* $10 Gift Card to Walgreens

This is for summer injuries and illnesses (and prevention!), so to enter the contest, please leave a comment in the comment section on any of the following topics:

  • your tips for keeping children safe and healthy during the summer
  • your tips on dealing with summer injuries or illnesses
  • your story of a summer injury or illness and how you dealt with it

The contest will run from today, June 26, 2009 to 11:59 P.M. Monday, July 6th. At that time, we’ll take all qualifying entries (and no, “enter me!” or “I want to win” don’t count! :) ), and enter them into a randomizer to pick two winners.

The winners will be notified by email so be sure to leave your email address, make sure it’s entered correctly, and b5media.com email doesn’t go into your spam (or check your junk mailbox).

You can enter more than once, but only once a day.

The best tips will be gathered into one posting so people can read the suggestions from others.

Good luck!

I always remind my son to start hydrating before he goes out to play soccer when it’s hot, but not to drink a lot just before he plays.

  8. Marie says:

I carry a small kids first aid kit in the car which I supplement with their favorite bandaids and small tubes of neosporin, etc. That way I always have what I need just for them!

  9. Paula Myers says:

Make sure they don’t get too hot and drink plenty of water!

  10. LindaD says:

Another tip for keeping kids safe: If you are having a party where both kids and adults are around a pool, consider hiring a teenager with life guard certification to keep an eye on swimmers. Adults often get too caught up in hosting and conversation to mind young swimmers.

    Sunscreen and water- a MUST!

  15. Zoey says:

My best tip for keeping children safe and healthy during the summer is to keep them close and watch them carefully! Of course do not forget to reapply the sunscreen often.

  16. Carol G says:

Water safety is so important during the summer. Make sure that everyone has a flotation device on when on the water, and make certain that it fits. Very small children may have to be left with someone on shore, since it is sometimes hard to find one the appropriate size.

  17. djgroz says:

Drink Lots of cool water & use sun screen if you have to be out!

Give the kids plenty of water, sunscreen and do lots of hand washing!

  24. Renee Turner says:

My best tip is to make sure kids are always wearing bike helmets. They ride bikes alot in the summer and when they run in and out of the house, they may forget to put them back on. It only takes one serious head injury to ruin a child’s life!

  25. Sheila P says:

Don’t get overheated and drink plenty of water, especially after exerting or doing lots of physical activities!

  26. checkers says:

Keep an eye on the children at all time and feed them healthy and or organic foods and see they get away from their ipods and computers and cell phones to get some exercise.

  27. Michelle H. says:

One tip I have is to make sure to carry plenty of cool drinks and snacks, such as fruit in a cooler when travelling in a hot car. Kids can get dehydrated so easily in a hot car.

  28. Nancy says:

I got totally sunburned on my honeymoon on a cruise, sitting on the deck as we approached land. After suffering through pain and chills, I learned to always use the strongest sunscreen I could find.

  29. Victoria says:

At a summer bbq as a child, I was playing catch with other kids and fell onto the side of a lit bbq pit causing a major burn on my arm. I went to the hospital and had treatment daily for several weeks. Now though, whenever we’re in a park I make sure the bbq pit is in an area where children can’t accidentally fall around it or back into it while playing. It sounds like a freak accident but I actually know other people who have done it. Be careful when grilling!

  30. Elizabeth says:

I have a travel first aid kit which goes with me everywhere and has everything I could possibly imagine needing.

  31. Maja says:

sunscreen is a must for everybody. my kid doesn’t go out in the sun without it.

  32. theodore esteghamat says:

Stay hydrated whenever you go outside.

Never leave the house with extra bottled water.
You need this to stay hydrated & if you vechical breaks down……you will need it to help stay cool until a tow truck comes.

Wear sunscreen even on cloudy days…….the Uv rays can still damage your skin.

  34. DanV says:

My main tips for keeping kids safe is sunscreen and bug spray, and longer pants to prevent ticks

  35. Pamela S says:

I believe in applying sunscreen frequently and liberally. Also encouraging kids to drink frequently when outside playing as they may not notice they’re thirsty until they’re already dehydrated. Thanks.

  36. Donna K says:

My main tip is not to forget the sunscreen.

  37. Jessica says:

I keep my children safe during the summer by making sure they have all their immunizations before they head to camp. I sent my daughter to her grandmother’s house to attend camp. SHe got sick and my mom had to take her to the doctor. I found that is is very important to have a Medical Power of Attorney when your kids will be under some elses care. Make sure they have copies of insurance cards etc.

  38. Chrysa says:

Sunburn and heat stroke are serious in the summer, so try to limit sun exposure!

  39. Gianna says:

I always make sure my kids get enough to drink so they don’t dehydrate.

  40. Lily Kwan says:

My tip on dealing with summer injuries or illnesses is to stay well hydrated.
