Genetics and Health is Alive!

November 30, 2005 by Lei

Welcome to the revamped Genetics and Health blog (formerly known as the Genetics and Public Health Blog). Our former network, About Weblogs, merged with b5media in November and this is the result: our own domain name, new design, and new teammates.

Since we’re starting anew, I will introduce myself again to both old readers and new. I am Hsien-Hsien (shen-shen) Lei and I have a PhD in epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. My area of expertise is in the genetic epidemiology of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and kidney disease.

The mission of the Genetics and Health blog is to share information on the genomic revolution – how it will change our lives and what we can do to become informed consumers. Genetic technology is advancing rapidly and we should learn how use it to improve our health as well as how to prevent its misuse.

For more information on me and this blog, take a look at the welcome message I wrote in April 2005. I look forward to discussing genetics and health with you either via comments or e-mail (hsienlei@b5media.com).

  1. Thanks for hanging in there with us, razib. WordPress is also a lot more functional than Nucleus. So what’s with the label? Shall I sign myself, Hsien the Boring Moderate? ;)

  2. shen shen ? .. ooops. thanks for clearing that up *embarrassed at the way I was pronouncing your name to myself*

I’m glad to add this new feed to my Bloglines :-)

  3. Hi HART! Glad to see you here. No worries about slaughtering my name. It’s an everyday occurrence.

So…you wouldn’t have added Genetics and Health to your Bloglines if it were still back at About Weblogs, eh? ;)

  4. So what’s with the label?

firefox saves my handle between wordpress blogs it seems. so that is a handle i use an another blog so people don’t think i’m muslim (from my name).

also, have you considered putting in a redirect for the old weblog site?

  5. wordpress saves handles between blogs a lot of the time in firefox. people on another blog sometimes think i’m muslim from my name, so i added that.

  6. You’re probably right (about bloglines – wasn’t subscribed before) although I have been following your old site since mid July .. usually (a) when my depressing DNA and Genomic stock investment portfolios usually scraped up, I mean issued a public release and I just wanted to catch up in the field .. also (b) when Shai was catching up on her posting and I’d stick around and browse … as you probably guessed, that started to become more infrequently on that last part *g*

  7. Cary says:

    hehe…there’s a woman over at About.com who still thinks I’m a she ;D

  8. razib: The redirect isn’t working right now but somebody (?!) is working on it. :(

HART: I was just teasin’ ya. There won’t be any quizzes or tests. Oh oops, there usually is one on Saturdays but considering we just got started here, you were reprieved. hehe

Cary: Hi! How could she think you were a woman?! Does she not know Cary Grant?!

  9. What is the easiest way to subscribe to this blogs rss feed?

  10. Deb says:

I will update my links. Just read a great paper on a genetic study in london regarding the gay gene.

Bocklandt, S. ; Horvath, S.; Vilain, E.; Hamer. D.H. ; Sandovici, I. (2006) Extreme skewing of X chromosome inactivation in mothers of homosexual men. Human Genetics, 118(6): 691-694.

I think I will put this on as my next post. Genetics is so cool in my book. Blog on!!!

It’s been a truly fabulous year spent obsessing over studying genetics and the implications for our lives now and in the future. In the next year, I hope we’ll be able to kick it up a notch to improve your visit to Genetics and Health with the help of the $2 million in funding b5media just received. [...]
