7 Gifts For The Mental Health Consumer

OK, so yesterday I told you the five things my brain would love for Christmas, but since I doubt any of you want to shell out the money for any of that stuff (honestly, what’s Dave’s going rate these days?), you’re probably more interested in what to get the other mental health patients and advocates in your life?

What would be good, thoughtful presents for them? On that note, are there even such things as good, thoughtful presents for mental health consumers? What if they get offended? Are there presents out there that won’t offend?

And, it’s December 19th – there’s not much time left!

Luckily for you people, I’m on top of it.

Below are seven great ideas for Christmas presents for the mental health consumer or advocate. Actually, these are great presents all year long!

  1. A pill organizer. Let’s face it: Some of us take a lot of medicine. Whether it’s prescription, over-the-counter, or vitamins, many of us do take our fair share. I don’t recommend giving one of these to your boss, but as a stocking stuffer for your mom or brother – people you have that kind of relationship with – it wouldn’t be a bad idea.
  2. Spa treatment. Whether it’s a day at a nearby resort or a coupon for a massage with a mani/pedi combo, anyone – mental health consumer or not! – would love this pampering stress reliever.
  3. A silver ribbon product. Yes, this was included in yesterday’s list. These products are great for everyone. They show support, help advocate, and raise funds for brain-related organizations. Who’d be offended by that?
  4. A visit from Merry Maids. Or some other cleaning service. For many folks, a clean house helps calm the nerves and soothe the soul – not to mention give them time to enjoy other things! Similar to the pill organizer, you might want to save this gift for the person in your life who understands that you’re giving it to them to give them a break, and not because you think their house is a pig sty.
  5. Lavendar. Candles, lotion, body wash, room spray – anything scented with lavender. Why? Lavender promotes calm, peaceful, mellow feelings and is often used to help promote sleep. Lavender has also been said to help with regaining control of emotions and even indecisiveness.
  6. Music. Do I really even need to elaborate on this one? If so, refresh yourself with The Mental Benefits of Music Therapy.
  7. A book. Or two or three. Buzzle.com lists 7 Benefits of Reading Fiction (several of which are mental health-related), and even I touched on the idea that Harry Potter could help temporarily ease mild depression. (Though, now that the series is over…that speculation is debatable!)

Have anything to add to the list? If not, start shopping!
