80’s Flashback

Okay, although Kerri and I have been together for a fair dinkum relative to our scant years on this planet, our history doesn’t QUITE go all the way back to the 80’s. Early 90’s? Yes. 80’s? No.

That doesn’t mean we don’t both have fond memories of the Decade of Greed… though we were both too young to really know about it. The 80’s were the decade of our youth. Who didn’t love The Smurfs or Alvin and the Chipmunks? And we both fondly remember the blockbuster NBC’s Thursday night lineup: The Cosby Show, Family Ties/A Different World, Cheers, Night Court, Hill Street Blues. (She had to go to bed after Family Ties, but I got to stay up through Hill Street Blues. That probably explains a lot, doesn’t it?) Or any of the other sitcoms that ruled the airwaves of the 80’s.

We didn’t live completely parallel decades, however. She was a Chicago and Europe kinda gal, while I was busy listening Public Enemy and Run DMC. (Imagine my surprise when I learned that The Beastie Boys ripped of Led Zeppelin and not the other way around!) We have a lot more common ground in newer music… because she’s seen the light of day, but when it comes to the songs of our youth we run in opposite directions. Look though our iTunes library and you’ll easily guess who rates the songs. :)

How about you and your spouse? Whether you knew each other or not, how do the stories go when you flashback to the 80’s? We’re you a matched set of Cabbage Patch Twins? Or is there more laughing and finger pointing? (Somewhere around the house is a photo of me breakdancing with a bunch of those fat, neon laces in my shoes tied as headbands and that. Kerri can’t find it, but I swear I didn’t destroy it… despite the many, many reasons I might have for doing so.)

  1. We talk about The Dukes of Hazzard and stuff like that, but like you and Kerri, our music tastes differ greatly (and sometimes they still do).
