Ahhhh…the totally radical 80’s! I was still a youngun’ during that decade, so I didn’t get to enjoy the punk rock revelry that most of my mommy peers did. But I do remember quite a bit about that decade and got to witness the fabulous fads, glorious music and awesome sitcoms that graced the fondly remembered time period. Here are a few of my own memories and most loved things about the 1980’s:
- Billy Idol. Hot then…hot now!
- Family Ties. The last functional Caucasian family on television.
- The Cosby Show. I sooooo wanted to be a Cosby kid!
- Ronald Reagan. Great man, great leader, greatly missed.
- Divo. Two words…Whip It!
- The birth of American mohawks.
- Fluorescent fashion. Loved it then, but hope it never returns!
- Music in general because it did not yet contain the words “Bitches” or “Hos.”
- Roller skates. I still cannot roller blade.
- Side pony tails. I hear they’ve made a come back. I think I’ll try one on for size…
- Playing in my front yard without my mother fearing for our safety. I do not have have that luxury.
- Perms. My mom had one, I had one and even my dad had one.
- Lunch pails made of metal. I had a Rainbow Brite one that I adored!
- Jelly shoes. They made my feet sweat like a hooker in church, but they looked way cool!
- Disneyland. It was still affordable for a family to go back then, without taking a second out on the house.
- Andy Toon. Oh baby! He was the hottest guy at my elementary school. My kids still tease me about him!
- The innocence of childhood. I was young, naive and life was good!

80’s music was definitely one of the best things to come out of the 80’s and stay! They are my favorite songs to karaoke!
Loved how you described Jelly shoes. I couldn’t have said it better!
You’re really a spring chicky aren’t ya?
Jelly shoes were the most uncomfortable things ever invented! But I squeezed my little sweaty foot into a pair of pink sparkly ones for a summer!
Also, neon sunglasses! I remember those.
