A 99 Cent Wedding

I’ve been writing about eco-friendly wedding dresses for a couple other blogs this Summer and in my research I’ve found a lot of articles about inexpensive weddings. I like the idea of a wedding on the cheap, because I’m bothered by the idea of a couple starting their life together with a one-day party that could lead to a big debt. Why not spend that money on a down payment for a house?
I do love to watch wedding shows, like Whose Wedding Is It Anyway. I like to watch the couple pick the flowers and I like to see the hall with the decorations, but when it gets down to it, I’m just too boring and practical to ever have a big wedding myself. My idea of the perfect wedding would be an outdoor picnic or BBQ with friends and family.
In the Beverly Hills area, some folks are doing it even cheaper than I would. They are signing up to be one of 9 couples to get married on 09/09/09 at the 99 Cent Only Store.
The store will cover the costs of the minister and will even reimburse the couple up to $70 for the marriage license. The wedding, of course, will be held with items from the 99-Cent Only Store, including 99.99-cent place settings and a 99.99-cent wedding dress made of white T-shirts, table runners and loofahs.
Click here to see a wedding dressmade up entirely of items found at the 99 Cent Only store. It’s a version of a Chanel Couture gown. The weddings will be held at the store located at 6121 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills, California.

That dress is brilliant! What a great idea. My sister was divorced before she finished paying for her first wedding! (She’s on #3)…
IF I EVER (big IF) get married, it will be something like that! Big on friends; easy on money!
I love the idea of something relaxed with the kids running around playing. My siblings, their kids, close friends. That’s the way I want to do it.
I am happy that FINALLY people are looking more toward having friends, family and memories from their wedding instead of DEBT!
I know three friends who spent between $50,000 and $100,000 on their weddings in the past five years. Two out of three couples are no longer together and you can bet that they are still paying on that very lavish day.

Oh, boy. That would suck!
I actually liked the 99 cent store wedding gown. The front is really pretty.
I thought it was clever and being made of t-shirts, it’s probably very comfortable. I bet not a lot of brides were comfy dresses on their big day.
Michelle, I totally agree with you! Expensive weddings just don’t make sense to me. I’ve always had the same thoughts about just having a backyard garden/bbq wedding. I think it would be just as much fun, and way less stressful for you after the fact! That, and I think I have enough debt right now without wedding costs.
