A Bump In The Road

Surgery went fairly quickly. Mom was in moderate pain, relieved by some lovely medication that made her warm and fuzzy, like the grandma we all remember. Later that night, the extensive wound started bleeding enough for us to decide to call it in. The doctor on call was (thankfully) the one who did the work. He recommended ice and for her to sleep upright for the night. That seemed to work.
Today is her birthday, and she was forced from the kitchen so that the boys and I could make her dinner and clean up. Grandma likes to take over the dish detail. While we were cooking, she came into the room and I noticed that things were not looking very good. She was clearly much more swollen, her pain was making it though the pain medication, and the wound was draining once again.
I did what any red blooded daughter in law would do: I called it in. The doctor wanted us to come in for a look-see, but of course, we are experiencing a major ice storm. After some back and forth, we decided that we could wait until morning. She is also going to be on antibiotics, in case some infection is brewing.
The big moment came, when I had to tell my mom what I had done. She really did not want to even call the doctor, and is very unhappy about having to see the doctor once again. It is hard to walk a fine line between taking care of her and letting her decide. Finally, she relented. We are going to go in the morning (after chores), and getting an experienced look at the problem. I am relieved, anxious and brewing a major headache.
The biggest news is that her adult grandson, his significant other, and their two kids are coming for a week and a half, to visit with her. For a surprise. Tomorrow night. Have I mentioned that it is a secret?
