A Clear Distinction

“We hope we have made clear the distinction between the alcoholic and the non-alcoholic.
If, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic.
If that be the case, you may be suffering from an illness which only a spiritual experience will conquer.”

Although I agree with your definition of “alcoholic” I disagree that alcoholism is an illness that can only be conquered by a spiritual experience. There are thousands and thousands of alcoholism “success” stories that had nothing at all to do with a spiritual experience. Surely for some, a spiritual experience is needed but the facts show that this is not a requirement or necessity for all alcoholics.

Hi Denny,
Please know that what I posted above was posted in the hope of being helpful and was not intended to be a jumping off point for contention about what will and won’t work. Neither was it intended as the “end all, be all” point of view regarding getting sober. Of course, the road to hell is lined with good intentions.
I really didn’t see this the way you have and know you are certainly entitled to feel the way you do. AA makes no claim on exclusivity for sobriety and I’m not trying to change that…
This was true of my experience and I passed it along. As my sponsor said, and I agree, I don’t care what keeps you sober as long as you know what it is and you do it.
Thanks for stopping by and keep up the good work.
