A Finder’s Fee for a Lost Gameboy

Works for me WednesdayLife in my son’s world has been out of whack for the past two weeks. Why? Because he had misplaced his beloved Game Boy Advance SP. He has looked high and low in every nook and cranny he could think of.

Because I am a “mean” Mom, I told him that if he didn’t find it he would have to buy a replacement – whether it was a new GBA or a Nintendo DS, but I wasn’t paying for it.

This morning my daughter was getting a shirt out of the laundry room when she spotted the missing GameBoy. How it got in there is anyone’s guess.

After thanking his sister over and over, I recommended he pay her a “finder’s fee” of $5. What do you think? Was that fair? Think of the money he just saved! And, hopefully he will learn to be a little more organized with his expensive toys now and that works for me!

I think it’s a great idea, Char! I think doing something like this can teach teens to be a little more responsible with their things. And it did save him a lot of money. I know those things aren’t cheap!

Glad to hear it Gayle! Sometimes I second guess myself, but he has to learn somehow.

Is this a boy thing or what? My boys are 7 and 32 (ok, husband, but he definitely has this boy tendency) and I am constantly having to locate things for them. Even my 3 year old girls get drug in to the finding mode. Maybe I’ll start charging a “Finder’s Fee”.

Jen – thanks for stopping in. As long as they don’t start hiding each others stuff in order to collect, I think we are good.

I do the same thing from a different angle. I offer a reward($1-2) to the kids if they can find something I’ve misplaced. So far they’ve found keys, sunglasses, remotes, library books, and jewelry.
