A Four-Dollar Gewurztraminer

New Gewurz GewurztraminerWhen  you see wine marked down so low, you have to wonder what you’re going to get…. This 2006 New Gewurz Gewurztraminer was marked down to $4 at Cost Plus World Market, and I’ve seen it around elsewhere from $9 to $11. I’m usually quite happy with my purchases from there, and this was a wine that had come across my radar before, so I decided to finally give it a go. Made by Alexander Valley Vineyards, this is their first release of the year, akin to Beaulolais Nouveau.  According to the website, “To capture and enhance the lively, spicy character of this varietal, we cold-ferment the chilled juice then immediately bottle the wine.”  With the 2007 already out, I’m sure the 2006 needed to clear the shelves, hence the sale. And while not my favorite Gewurztraminer, it was certainly worth the try, especially for so little harm to my credit card. It spoke of citrus and stone fruits–grapefruit,  peach, & pear, along with hints of pineapple and petrol.  Tickling the tongue a bit was some spritziness. I served the wine with seared tuna, fried rice, and steamed broccoli spiced up with Mae Ploy sweet chili sauce—a nice pairing.

An interesting find that makes me willing to give other cheap deals a try.

Thanks for this review! This wine is always on the shelf in the little grocery store near us in Sonoma (not for $4, I hasted to add) and there is something about “New Gewurz” that has always made me hesitate. Sounds like a fun wine to try, at the very least.

    Dr. Debs,
I always hesitated to buy it as well, for some reason. But it was impossible to pass up at that price.
