A Hot, Hearty Life

Today’s going to be a doozy in London. I can’t believe the BBC Weather Centre is predicting a high of 26°C with a high sun index. Perfect for this month’s b5media Science and Health Channel Theme Day focusing on the sun.
As always, the American Heart Association has already thought things through with an article on hot weather and cardiovascular disease.
How does hot weather affect the heart?
Extremely hot weather causes dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These risks increase when the humidity is above 70 percent and the temperature is above 70 degrees F. Heat and humidity interfere with the body’s natural cooling process.
On the London subway (Tube), I saw a sign reminding people to carry a bottle of water with them on the train in case of unavoidable delay. Good idea for all of us to drink lots of water no matter where we might be (although finding a bathroom on the subway train could be a problem).
