A Buddhist Monk in Thailand sits in a park enjoying a smoke.
Buddhist monks in training, are not allowed to smoke, as it is considered breaking of one of the 10 rules or precepts that junior monks must adhere to – not using consuming intoxicating drinks or drugs which lead to carelessness.
The others include not killing living creatures, not stealing, no sexual activity, no incorrect speech (lying, gossip, etc.), not eating during forbidden times (after midday), refraining from singing, dancing, and watching other forms of entertainment, not beautifying the body, not sleeping in a luxurious place, and lastly, not accepting money.
However once becoming monks, the 227 rules under the Bhikkhus’ Code of Discipline, to which they subscribe to, does not include any restrictions on smoking.
So looks like a smoke break is one of the few guilty pleasures allowed Buddhist monks.
