A Note on Bill Clinton’s Speech

August 28, 2008 by Kristina Chew, PhD

Hillary Clinton mentioned autism in her speech at the Democratic National Convention and, last night, Bill Clinton did too (”I will never forget the parents of children with autism and other severe conditions who told me on the campaign trail that they couldn’t afford health care and couldn’t qualify their kids for Medicaid unless they quit work or got a divorce”). Will Obama; will McCain……..

More than sadly, the mother with cancer and two adopted autistic children mentioned by Hillary Clinton has died.

That’s so sad she died so young, with no decent medical treatment. I hope there will be people to take care of her boys and love them like she did.

Even for us who have health insurance, I think the services provided nowadays in medical centers are terrible. It takes forever to get appointments (which is a life or death issue for cancer patients), and health plans don’t cover every treatment or medication you need.

More than universal healthcare, the new administration needs to look into the coverage policies of the health insurance plans. They’re a joke. This country has so much medical technology and yet very few people can take advantage of it.

Was it that mom, or was the reference to Lois Pilot, who died in October, 2000?

    About Lois Pilot,
Born in Cinaminson, N.J., Pilot grew up in the Love Canal, N.Y., area, near Niagara Falls, in the 1970s, when the area made worldwide headlines as a site of toxic dumping and pollution. After his wife was diagnosed with cancer in 1997, Kevin Pilot said, “we often talked about whether there was a connection. She was so young, and there was no history of cancer in her family, but we’ve never really had a way of connecting it.”

After their first son, Dylan, was diagnosed with autism in 1994, Lois Pilot became an activist and was instrumental in the founding and early organization of the Autism Coalition for Creative Educational Social Services, an Irvine-based group that, among other things, pushed successfully for a pilot program for autistic children at Aliso Viejo’s Foxborough Elementary School.

Maybe it’s how I read it, but I thought the reference was to Ms. Pilot.

  3. Yes, it’s Lois Pilot—–a commenter had left this.

Not that anyone might wish impinging on the privacy of the woman mentioned by Hillary Clinton but I think more than a few persons would wish to be of assistance.

  4. Moi says:

Oh, no, I’m sorry!! I read that and totally thought the woman was talking about the one Hillary mentioned.

I was one of those people Bill Clinton talked to. It’s a really sad day for anyone connected with spectrum individuals. You just don’t know it yet.
