A readers asks us about interstitial cystitis, IBS and vaginal bleeding

Yesterday, a reader posted this question for us in one of the comment sections:
Is anyone experiencing I.C. (interstitial cystitis), IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) & vaginal bleeding? You are not alone. I’m on Elmiron, have been suffering for many years. I’m already past menopause. As if these are not enough, also I’m on medication for high BP, high cholesterol, diabetes & thyroid cancer, thyroid gland taken out, followed by radiation treatment twice.
Marijke here: Do any of you have any of these issues and if so, what are your experiences? Has anyone else tried Elmiron?

My doctor said that I have IC….but I have vaginal bleeding, does IC give you vaginal bleeding???

Hi Annie – I don’t know enough about IC to be able to answer your question. Have you tried getting information from places like the Interstitial Cystitis Association (http://www.ichelp.org/)? They may be able to answer your question.
Hi, I have been diagnosed with IC since May of 2004, and have taken Elmiron daily ever since. I just “celebrated” 5 years of living on Elmiron. For the past 7 months, I have been experiencing a new symptom…everytime I have my period, I bleed through my urethra also. It’s pure blood and continues along with my monthly. Within a week of my monthly ending, it tapers off too. I do not want to go back to the doctor with this complaint, as I know they will want me to have a hysterectomy and surgery on my bladder…we do not have health insurance at this time. Is anyone else having this symptom? It’s almost like my bladder is shedding its lining also…Thanks for listening
