A Very Welcome ADVANCE Study On The Heels Of A Negative ACCORD Trial

This comes on the heels of a similar US ACCORD trial that was very disappointing. The ADVANCE study involved well over 11,000 high risk type 2 diabetics provided evidence that there is no increased risk of death among patients undergoing intensive blood sugar lowering treatments.

The study was very similar to it’s US counterpart and aimed to answer 2 questions in patients with type 2 diabetes.

First, does intensive treatment to lower blood pressure improve outcome; and second, does intensive treatment to reduce blood glucose improve outcome.

I am a bit relieved to also take note that the research was carried out over 5 years and experts in the field met every six months to review the study data for any safety issues or other concern. Though we need to wait for the research to be more definitive, analysis and reports are looking in a positive direction.
