About The Food Bowl

The Food Bowl is all about pets! Whether they walk on all-fours, fly, slither or swim I’ll try to get them covered! Don’t miss the Pet of the Week feature and submit your own pictures and pet information!

My family is fortunate to live with six critters of our own. First up we have the cats:

turbo

Turbo was the first pet my husband and I adopted when we were dating in 1997. He was purchased as a kitten at a pet store before either of us knew any better. He was the runt of the litter with a tiny meow, and is now able to reach the counter just standing on his hind legs and his meows wake us up every morning if he feels the alarm clock isn’t doing a good enough job.

Next up is Sage. Do not let that beautiful little face fool you – she is a Hell Cat. Seriously. Her nicknames (used only by the adults) include Bitch Kitty and Psycho. She’s always been extremely skittish and I think the family we adopted her from as a kitten contributed to that.

The last cat we have Kricket. We adopted Kricket from the Salt Lake City Humane Society in January 1998. We went in “just to look” and the rest is history. She is skittish but not nearly as much as Sage, and loves to cuddle, though she will not, under any circumstance, get on your lap. She’ll butt up against you for rubs and pets, but if you even attempt to get her on your lap you’ll get about half a second of kitty attention before she’s off the couch and into hiding.

Next, the dogs:

This is Chip as a puppy. He’s a chihuahua we adopted in October 2002. He was my birthday present that year but we had to wait an extra month for him to be old enough to bring home. He’s a total sweetheart though it takes him a little time to warm up to strangers. He’s an excellent little watch dog.

This is Honey on the day we brought her home in October 2004. We think she’s about nine years old and a chihuahua/rat terrier mix. She had kind of a rocky life right before she came to live with us. She had had two separate elderly owners who passed away on her and was taken by a friend of the last owner. Unfortunately Honey had developed some issues during that time and had some bathroom problem. The last owner took her to a vet clinic to be put down because she didn’t want to deal with it. The vet tech was given ownership of her and put up and ad on Petfinder, where we found her.

She is an absolute and total sweetheart. She loves meeting people and other pets and she and Chip, after almost three years together, are finally playing and cuddling together, with a lot of work on Honey’s part!

In December 2007 we added one last pet to the family: Simon the betta fish. He was a surprise for our kids for the winter solstice and has brought no small amount of joy to our youngest, who loves all things marine.
