An estimated 9 million adults experience Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A recent nationwide survey (sponsored by McNeil Pediatrics), found that adults with ADHD generally agree that having the disorder greatly impacts certain areas of their lives, including the ability
to focus at work, responsibilities at home and relationships.
A high number of adults surveyed, 68%, wished that people understood having ADHD doesn’t mean a person is less intelligent.
The survey also found that the symptoms that impact adult ADHD sufferers the most include: getting distracted easily, procrastinating, difficulties staying focused, listening during conversations and staying organized. More than half of employed adults who took the survey said that their condition strongly impacted their ability to succeed at work.
In his recent expert column at ADHD Allies on Facebook, Ari Tuckman, PsyD gives tips on taking charge of ADHD. One piece of advice Dr. Tuckman gives is to stay connected by joining support groups and taking advantage of online resources like ADHD Allies. He also notes the importance of educating yourself by learning as much as possible about ADHD and partnering with a health care provider who understands the disorder.
If you have ADHD, have you joined any support groups or online communities?
