Adult Children Of Alcoholics – Characteristics

January 22, 2007 by Mark

Once again, from Buddy T. at About.com’s Alcohol and Substance Abuse

A list of common characteristics which many people who grew up in dysfunctional homes seem to share, developed by Dr. Janet Woititz.

How many can you relate to?

…guess at what normal is.

…have difficulty in following a project through from beginning to end.

…lie when it would be just as easy to tell the truth.

…judge themselves without mercy.

…have difficulty having fun.

…take themselves very seriously.

…have difficulty with intimate relationships.

…overreact to changes over which they have no control.

…constantly seek approval and affirmation.

…feel that they are different from other people.

…are either super responsible or super irresponsible.

…are extremely loyal, even in the face of evidence that loyalty is undeserved.

…tend to lock themselves into a course of action without giving serious consideration to alternative behaviors or possible consequences. This impulsivity leads to confusion, self loathing, and loss of control of their environment. As a result, they spend tremendous amounts of time cleaning up the mess.

    its funny I watch my children grow up with recovery parents and I hope I don;NT sound to boastful when I say they are quite the opposite of what I or my wife was , thats God doing for me what I can not , I always remember that these children are in my care only I don;NT own them. as with most everything in my life today ,
    In my fifth year I went to an Acoa meeting and man was it rough I was about 3or 4 when my sponsor fond out i was told he would let me know when i was ready , have ;NT been to one since then. and have these defects today , through AA their not so glaring { steps 4-12}
