Advocating for Autism: Why this blog

March 21, 2006 by Kristina Chew, PhD

Shortly after Charlie was diagnosed with autism on July 22, 1999, we heard about the Gallaghers, two of whose three children have autism. Their daughter, Alanna, is now 15 years old while their son, Austin, is 13. Since June 2003, the Gallaghers have been fighting against their school district’s proposal to place Austin in a residential facility. Austin has made tremendous gains–able to speak in full sentences after only being able to say about 25 or 30 words–and these buoy his parents’ resolve, as the Asbury Park Press of March 19, 2006, relates.

  1. The link no longer works. I first heard of Bobbie Gallagher about that time too. Nick was dx in June of 98 and Matt in Feb of 99.
