In March of 2007, my boyfriend was living in a small apartment in the suburbs of Boston. As we exited the building, heading out for a late dinner one night, we were greeted by a mangy-looking black and white cat sitting on the stoop of the back stairs. She was being vocal, and almost blocking our passage, so my boyfriend bent down to give her a little pet. As he stroked her, his eyes darted immediately back to mine as he said, “Oh wow…she’s so skinny”.

The cat didn’t seem to be budging, and we couldn’t just drive off to dinner, leaving a cold skinny cat there, so I sat on the steps while my boyfriend went knocking on apartment doors–looking for cat food. It seemed nobody in the building had a cat, so he tore open a leftover chicken burrito and brought the meat outside to the steps. The cat ate ferociously as we discussed what to do next.

I remember saying, “Well, we have two options…we call a shelter and drop her off, or we put her in the bathroom and go to Petco….Do you want a cat?”. We had never really thought about a pet until this moment. We gathered up the kitty and giggled all the way upstairs before enclosing her in his bathroom. That night, we went to Petco, asked desperately for help picking out “things cats need!?” (we were clueless), and became first time parents of a beautiful baby girl (cat, of course).

Our girl was so hungry and dehydrated the night we took her in that the most she could do is let out a little “quack, quack” noise, in lieu of a meow. It was obvious at that point that she should be named Aflac, or Princess Aflac as she seems to prefer. Aflac was found in a College town, and coal-cat.jpgwe believe she must have belonged to a student who moved back home and left her to fend for herself.

Aflac and her brother Coal (also found, but as an abandoned kitten) now share a spacious condo, with both Mom and Dad, and none of us could be any happier about it! They bring great joy to our lives, and we hope we’re doing the same for them.
